Background: To avoid the stigmatization associated with HIV testing, people may attempt to seek a psychological cover that allows them to conceal their interest in HIV testing by requesting other non-stigmatized services as their reason for visiting the clinic.
Methods: We use the 1992-1997 NHMACS dataset to test whether people who test for HIV are more likely to seek psychological cover than people who receive similar non-stigmatized services.
Results: We find that compared to people who receive similar non-stigmatized services, people who test for HIV will be more likely to: 1) State a reason for visit unrelated to the service performed, 2) request the services as a secondary rather than primary reason for visit, and 3) mask their interest in testing for HIV by receiving services unrelated to HIV testing.
